Why have Oxo-biodegradable plastic bags…?
Poly bags are a low energy consuming and high performance product that can carry up to 2000 times their weight. They are inexpensive, hygienic, durable, reusable and recyclable. At present approximately 45%-50% of bags produced are reused as trash bags, 35% are sent to landfill as waste and only 15%-20% are reclaimed and recycled into plastic building products. Having Oxo-biodegradable bags instead of traditional bags will ensure that all bags sent to land fill or inadvertently littered in nature will degrade over time and leave the environment cleaner and safer for future generations. Oxo-biodegradable bags produced by Omniplast have been tested in 2007-08 by a Government funded provincial industrial research center (the C.R.I.Q) and have been proven to be compatible with the recycling of traditional plastics. Furthermore, new studies are underway to reclaim and recycle Oxo-biodegradable bags into liners of Tetra Pack beverage containers, making Oxo-biodegradable bags a very good environmental choice.
Degradation and Biodegradation process:
Oxo-biodegradable poly bags have a prescribed limited life and will degrade once exposed to the outside element (oxygen, sunlight and heat). TDPA (totally degradable plastic additives) are added in the film during the extrusion process and will trigger an accelerated oxidation and degradation of the bag once exposed for a prolonged period to the outside elements. This process is in compliance with the ASTM standard guide on Oxo-biodegradation (ASTM 6954-04). Degrading bags will first oxidize and then breakdown into small flakes and within months disintegrate and disappear. Once degraded, bags molecules resting in fertile soil will be consumed by micro organisms and will biodegrade cleanly over time, leaving biomass, water and CO2.
Safe for food contact:
Oxo-biodegradable bags have been tested for food contact and are in compliance with the United States Food and Drug Agency (FDA) and Canadian Food Inspection agency (CFIA).
Open packing boxes and exposure to outside elements:
Should packing boxes be open and bags exposed freely to ambient oxygen and direct sunlight for an extended period of time, the degradation process will be triggered and bags will start to degrade over several months. It is recommended to keep all unused bags in closed and sealed packing boxes, away from direct sunlight.
Oxo-biodegradable bags must be stored at temperatures not exceeding 35 degrees centigrade in well sealed boxes. It is preferable that no volatile organic compound or oxidation agents be present in warehouse air. Shelf life is guaranteed for 18 months from time of manufacture. It is recommended that stocks ordered do not exceed 6 month usage and that proper rotation of inventory is exercised.
Not designed for compost:
Oxo-biodegradable bags are NOT designed for compost and should not be used as a receptacle for organic waste sent to composting. Only Hydro-biodegradable bags made from starch are suitable. Such bags comply with the ASTM norm on biodegradation (ASTM D 6400) and can be purchased in your local grocery stores.
